When to Skip Sediment Filtration

Do I really need a sediment filter? If your well has ANY visible sediment (sand, rust, cloudiness) or ANY downstream water treatment equipment — yes. Sediment fouls softener resin, iron filter media, UV chambers, and RO membranes rapidly if not pre-filtered. The $80-$200 sediment filter cost pays for itself many times over in downstream equipment life extension.
What micron rating should I use? Standard whole-house: 5-micron (Pentek ECP5-20BB). Coarse pre-filter for heavy sediment: 50-micron (Pentek ECP50-20BB) or spin-down (iSpring WSP-50). RO pre-treatment: 1-micron (Max Water 4-Pack). Very fine silt: 1-micron. For most residential wells, 5-micron is the sweet spot.
How often do sediment cartridges need replacement? Depends on your well’s sediment load. Typical residential well with mild sediment: 6-12 months per cartridge. Heavy-sediment well: 2-4 months. Very clean well: 12+ months. Monitor pressure drop — when your household water pressure drops noticeably, the cartridge is saturated.
Spin-down or cartridge — which is better? Different tools. Spin-down handles coarse sediment (sand, rust) reusably; cartridge handles fine polishing (silt, sub-micron). Wells with heavy visible sediment need spin-down as a first stage. Wells with only fine cloudiness need cartridge only. Wells with both need both stages.
Can I install a sediment filter myself? Yes for all the systems in this guide (2-3 hours DIY with basic plumbing skills). Spin-down is the simplest — connect two fittings, install a drain, done. Cartridge housings need a bypass valve and wrench access for cartridge changes.
What’s the difference between pleated and melt-blown cartridges? Pleated cartridges (Pentek ECP series) have 3-5× more surface area, longer service life, lower pressure drop. Melt-blown cartridges (Max Water 4-Pack) are cheaper per cartridge, more chlorine-tolerant, better for RO pre-filtration. Pleated is standard for whole-house; melt-blown is common for point-of-use.
Do sediment filters remove chemicals or bacteria? No. Sediment filters only remove suspended solid particles. For chemicals (chlorine, taste, odor, VOCs) you need carbon filtration. For bacteria you need UV sterilization. For dissolved metals/salts you need reverse osmosis.
Should sediment filter go before or after other treatment? ALWAYS first. Every other treatment (softener, iron filter, UV, carbon, RO) benefits from clean water reaching it. Sediment fouls all of them if it hits them directly.
What if my well pump produces sand every time it runs? Install a spin-down filter (iSpring WSP-50) immediately after the pressure tank. Flush it weekly initially, then adjust frequency based on how quickly sediment accumulates. If sand production continues heavily, the well may need service (pump too close to bottom of well, or well screen deteriorating) — consult a well contractor.

Do sediment filters waste water? Cartridge systems: essentially none — water flows through the cartridge and out to the house. Spin-down systems: minor water waste during flushing (5-20 gallons per flush, typically weekly to monthly).
Are Amazon-brand cartridges as good as Pentek/Culligan? Comparable for standard use. Max Water and similar generic cartridges have similar filtration performance per third-party testing. The difference is brand warranty (Pentek/Culligan back their cartridges longer) and consistency (name-brand batches vary less). For a stable install with consistent water chemistry, generic cartridges are fine. For a demanding install with variable water quality, name-brand is safer.
