Wyoming's geology ranges from the granitic core of the Wind River and Bighorn ranges to thick Tertiary basin-fill sediments in the large structural basins (Powder River, Wind River, Green River). The Ogallala Formation underlies the southeast, and volcanic terrain characterizes the Yellowstone region with geothermal influences on groundwater.

Most residential wells in Wyoming are drilled to 220 feet, with a typical range of 50–700 feet. Water table depth: 50-200 feet on the eastern plains; 100-500 feet in intermontane basins; artesian conditions from the Madison Limestone in some areas.

Wyoming does not have a state well driller licensing program — one of the few states without one. However, the State Engineer's Office enforces well construction standards, and all wells must be permitted and completed by persons familiar with the regulations.

Best drilling months: May through October; extreme cold, high elevation, and deep snow severely limit winter drilling across most of the state.

Common Water Quality Concerns

Wyoming well water commonly contains: uranium, radium, selenium, total dissolved solids, hardness, sulfate, petroleum-related constituents near oil fields. A comprehensive water test after drilling (typically $150–$500) will identify which treatments, if any, your well needs.
